Cardinal Pierre: Pope Francis and the See Judge Act

Delivering the 2024 Cardinal Bernardin Lecture at the Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage, Loyola University, Chicago, Holy See Nuncio to the USA, Cardinal Christophe Pierre, spoke of the importance of the see-judge-method as a tool of ecclesial discernment, particularly in showing mercy.

He drew attention to Pope Francis’ role at the CELAM Conference in Aparecida, Brazil, in 2007, where, as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, he led the drafting process for the final document, which was structured on the see-judge-act model.

It is perhaps no surprise that Cardinal Pierre would be familiar with the see-judge-act. As he told me when I had the chance to meet him at the Francis at 10 Conference at St Ambrose University, Iowa, in March 2023, his mother had been one of the founders of the Action Catholic Indépendante (ACI), a Specialised Catholic Action movement for business people and professionals.

So it’s worth watching Cardinal Pierre’s lecture, which is now available on YouTube, with his comments on the SJA beginning at around 39:10 minutes.

And for those who understand French, Cardinal Pierre also mentions the example of his parents as “engaged lay people” and the foundational role of his mother in this video (from 2:15):
